OVERVIEW

Thousands of overseas companies are registered in the islands. After cleaning up its finance industry the territory was dropped from an international list of centres considered to be uncooperative tax havens.

Upmarket tourism is centred on Providenciales, or Provo. Coral reefs and 200 miles of beaches draw holidaymakers and divers, mostly from the US and Canada. But over-development is a concern; some fragile eco-systems, including wetlands and lagoons, are designated as protected areas.

There is little agriculture, though the territory is home to the world's only conch farm. The molluscs are exported.

Independence moves in the 1980s ended when a pro-dependency government was elected. Islanders have British citizenship. The territory enjoys strong links with Canada and politicians have occasionally mooted a political and economic union.

Once a dependency of Jamaica, the Turks and Caicos Islands became a crown colony upon Jamaican independence in 1962. The original inhabitants were Taino indians; later arrivals included slaves, brought from Africa to work on cotton plantations. Their descendants make up a majority of the population.

Wealthy retirees are among the more recent settlers. At the other end of the economic scale, migrants come from impoverished Haiti and the Dominican Republic. In turn, thousands of Turks and Caicos citizens take advantage of job prospects in the neighbouring Bahamass. The Wymara Turks & Caicos has been carefully designed to ensure that your privacy and relaxation in this tropical paradise is undisturbed. Floor to ceiling windows bring the unrivaled natural beauty of Grace Bay Beach right into your suite, blending indoor and outdoor living areas for a seamless tropical experience.

Turks and Caicos Geography

The Turks and Caicos Islands consist of two island groups in the Caribbean Sea south east of the Bahamass and north of Haiti with an area of 430 square kilometres. Eight of the fourteen islands are inhabited, Grand Turk, the seat of government, and Salt Kay being the most populous, with Providenciales the centre of tourist development.

There are three international airports. Miami is the main gateway to the Islands, with American Airlines operating a daily service from the city, in addition to a weekend service from New York's JFK. Delta, Spirit Air and US Airways operate more infrequent services from Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and Charlotte, respectively. British Airways operates a Sundays only flight from London. The national airline provides regular flights to other Caribbean destinations. There are also flights from, the Bahamass, Haiti and the Dominican republic.

cacoiTurks and Caicos Population, Language and Culture

The islands were discovered in the 15th century by Juan Ponce de Leon, a Spanish explorer, but remained uninhabited until 1768 when Bermudians arrived and established a salt panning industry. From 1874 to 1959 the islands were a Jamaican dependency. In 1962 when Jamaica became independent the islands became a British crown colony.

The official and spoken language is English. In July 2007 the population was estimated at just under 21,750 and is largely of black origin. The indigenous population are known as "Belongers". The culture is Afro-Caribbean. In recent years there has been a substantial amount of immigration from other, less successful parts of the Caribbean.

Regions, territories: Turks and Caicos Islands

The Turks and Caicos Islands, a British overseas territory, enjoy one of the more dynamic economies in the West Indies.

Tourism and offshore finance have replaced salt production as the main sources of prosperity for the low-lying islands and cays.
